According to the Japanese legend, the one who folds a thousand origami cranes may make a wish to the crane, which lives for a thousand years.
This tradition becomes the symbolic basis of the project “Thousand Paper Cranes for Budapest”, during which I folded a thousand paper cranes, which I printed one-by -one as papercuts. Each of the signed prints (along with the number of the crane) – to which a brief description of the project was attached as well – were put in envelopes. Together with the helpers of the project, we placed these envelopes at a thousand random points of Budapest.
What kind of life does the artwork start to live when it is left alone, exposed to coincidence? Where does it arrive? In the description attached in the envelopes, I asked the people who found them to send a picture or comment to the Facebook-page of the project.
The aim of making these prints is to have the opportunity to question the being and legitimacy of traditional reproducting processes of printmaking, or reproducting itself – although the thousand cranes are almost alike, they are unique, they were printed one-by one, and only one print is made of each. This leads to questions of originality, connections between originality and reproducting processes. How does the medium find its justification in the artwork, might it not be an impasse using it aimlessly, only for itself?

Ezer daru Budapestnek
Az ősi japán legenda szerint, aki meghajtogat ezer origami-papírdarut, az kívánhat valamit az ezer évig élő darutól.
Ez a hagyomány szolgáltatja a szimbolikus alapját az Ezer daru Budapestnek projektnek, amely során ezer papírdarut hajtogattam, melyeket egyenként mint papírmetszetet lenyomtattam. A nyomatok szignálva (a lenyomtatott daru sorszámát is feltüntetve), a projekt rövid leírásával együtt egy-egy borítékba kerültek. Ezeket a borítékokat a projekt segítőivel közösen Budapest ezer véletlen pontján helyeztük el.
Milyen életet kezd élni a műalkotás magára hagyva, a véletlenre bízva? Hol köt ki, hová érkezik? A borítékokba tett leírásokban a megtalálókat arra kértem, küldjenek visszajelzést a projekt Facebook-oldalára.
A nyomatok készítésének célja, hogy a projekt okán kérdéseket tehessünk fel a hagyományos sokszorosító grafikai eljárások mibenlétével, céljával, létjogosultságával kapcsolatban, egyáltalán a sokszorosítással kapcsolatban, hiszen az ezer daru majdnem egyforma, de mégsem ugyanazok, egyenként készült róluk nyomat, és csak egy darab, amely az eredetiség kérdésköréhez, az eredetiség és sokszorosító eljárások kapcsolatához vezet. Miként lesz értelme egy bizonyos médium használatának egy műalkotásban, nem zsákutca-e csak önmagáért, céltalanul használni azt?
